The Company:

About Us
We're one of the largest and most successful electrical engineering and electronics organisations in the world. Our technology, products and services touch almost all of our lives in some way every day of the year - from traffic lights and trains to the super-conducting magnets used in medical scanners, the servers at the heart of telecommunication networks and the drives behind many of the UKs manufacturing plants.

Graduate training and proflies:

Graduate programme
Due to our diversity, we don't just have one graduate programme at Siemens. The majority of our graduate programmes and roles arise in the areas of Engineering, IT, Finance and R&D. Occasionally, though, we do recruit into other functional areas such as Purchasing and Sales.

The majority of our undergraduate placement opportunities have a technical focus such as Engineering and IT. Placements in non-technical areas such as Finance, Sales & Marketing and HR arise occasionally.

Training programme
No matter which part of Siemens you join, one of our priorities is training and development. It's all about the continual development of the individual, making sure you have the right skills to continue innovating and pushing the boundaries in your role.

Training depends on the business you join and the role you're in. Throughout our businesses, we tailor training to the individual.

Typically you'll receive a mixture of on-the-job training and training structured with internal and external courses to give you the relevant industry recognised qualifications where appropriate. We've outlined the wide range of development tools we use here. For specific details, it's worth asking this question as part of the selection process.

Case Study
Wendy Bell
Traffic Design Consultant

I graduated in 2002 with a BSc (Hons) Computer Science from the University of St Andrews and joined Siemens Traffic Controls in that year as a Graduate Traffic Design Consultant based in Poole, Dorset.

When thinking about what kind of career to pursue, I took into account my strengths and the aspects of my university course I'd enjoyed most. I especially like speaking to people and seeing projects through from start to finish and these were key aspects of the Siemens role I saw advertised. The opportunity to work in a company like Siemens with innovative products was also appealing.

Information and FAQ

Locations
Siemens has manufacturing locations and offices all over the UK, with major sites from Aberdeen to Poole. Graduate and undergraduate vacancies could be at any of our sites.

For a few but not all of the graduate roles or programmes you'll be required to be based in different locations and therefore geographical flexibility is called for. You could either be based at different customer sites or different offices of the Siemens business you're in.

Graduate orientation
We know it can be hard leaving university life and settling into the working world! We're also aware that as Siemens is so diverse it can be difficult at first to get your head around what we do and where you fit in! This is why we run our UK-wide Graduate Orientation Event soon after you start. By attending, we hope to give you a greater insight into the overall organisation you've joined and make you feel part of the wider Siemens community.

No matter which part of Siemens you join, this event will complement the induction you'll receive from your local Siemens business.

Main benefits of attending:

  • Networking - you'll meet and network with all other new graduates across Siemens who are also under-going the same 'settling in' experience.
  • Learn about the wider Siemens - you'll gain an invaluable insight into the diverse range of projects, customers and industries Siemens is involved with.

This will benefit you generally and also, for example, when working on projects with other parts of the organization or when dealing with customers, who often expect employees to be able to answer general questions about Siemens in the UK.

  • Learn about yourself and others - you'll take part in team working and career planning activities to help you find out useful things about yourself and others.
  • Meet our Chief Executive - you'll get to hear first-hand from Alan Wood about everything from how we've grown as an organization since our founder first established the company in the UK over 160 years ago to our business objectives for the future. There will be plenty of time for questions too!
All in all, you'll leave with a greater understanding of the Siemens organisation and your role within it and you'll be equipped with a set of useful tools and information to help you integrate quickly into your new work environment.
