Why choose E.ON?
For starters, there were many different opportunities and a high level of mobility between different parts of the company. As an international company they offered opportunities to work abroad. I also saw that they were focussed on personalising my development and very flexible in terms of training.
What were your memories of the selection process?
I remember being surprised at how much effort they made to relax us. I expected a much tenser and more pressurised atmosphere. I was also surprised to meet so many people from the business. However, my strongest memory was leaving the assessment centre thinking ‘I really want that job'.
In simple terms, what do you do?
On a daily basis, I prepare instructions for the traders according to the needs of our portfolio. Weekly, I prepare reports on the position of our power portfolio, to show the aggregate position, and its proximity to the risk limits and structures that we have in place.
Describe your involvement in a major project.
In my current placement, Power Portfolio Risk Management, I've developed a new way to report the retail position to the traders, enabling them to implement differing trading strategies. This has also simplified the method in which we can analyse and report new products coming in from retail.
Which of your skills have proved useful? How have you developed them?
I would say that prioritising and organising my time have been two things which have really helped me since joining the company. I think my problem solving has improved, and it has primarily been driven by the projects that I've worked on.
What have you had in the way of formal training?
I've received a wide range of training. This has varied from ‘Personal Awareness and Impact Training' to ‘Presenting with Impact' and ‘Stakeholder Management'. I recently attended a two-day workshop to identify particular development needs at the company's development centre. I've even started German lessons.
What are your short-term/long-term ambitions
In the short term, I would like to raise my profile, particularly within energy wholesale, and use the opportunity to focus on developing new skills. Longer term, I would like to be in a senior role, managing people who have a lot of varied and challenging issues to face.
Beyond work, what's the social life like?
E.ON is a very social company, having such a large group of graduates all being employed at the same time made it easier to move away from university, friends and family. It also meant there's usually someone to go for a drink with after work!
In a single sentence, how would you sell a career with E.ON to undergraduates?
If you want to work with specialists who enjoy what they do - and who are interested in the future of the industry and excited about E.ON's role within it, then this is the company for you.
