The Company:

At British Energy, we're powering the low carbon generation. What that means is we're the UK's largest producer of electricity, but at the same time, the lowest carbon emitter of all the major electricity generators. We're rightfully proud of our green credentials and work to strictly enforced safety standards and environmental legislation.

We employ 6000 people, and we encourage personal progression and growth in each and every one of them while emphasising supportive team-work. This nurturing environment makes us a great company to work for, and it's why you should seriously consider joining us on our graduate scheme.

Make no mistake, we're a FTSE 100 company, so we'll put you through your paces. But prove to us you have what it takes; the drive, energy and determination to succeed, and we'll reward you well. We’ll offer you a full-time position and then the opportunities for growth are limitless. We put no ceiling on ambition.

Join a company that's powering Britain into the future. Join British Energy.

Graduate training and profiles:

As a graduate, you've got a lot to offer - and a great deal to gain. Which is what makes the British Energy graduate scheme so impressive. You see, you'll be challenged, questioned, developed and, naturally, supported throughout your entire two years with British Energy.

Not only is British Energy the UK's largest producer of electricity, but we're the lowest carbon emitter of the major UK electricity generators, focused on delivering clean, affordable energy for the long-term. Long-term also applies to the skills and knowledge you'll gain on our flexible two year scheme, whatever area you choose to work in, be it eNuclear Generation, Information Management, Supply Chain or HR.

You should have - or be expected to obtain - a minimum of a 2:2 degree (if a 3rd degree, it must be accompanied by a post graduate qualification in Engineering, Sciences or Business Areas); if you have industrial placement experience, even better. Mobility is required during the 2 year training period. You'll have strong communication and interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and open to change, be a team player and an individual who displays drive and commitment to the achievement of business goals.

Committed to your continued professional development, your progress won't end with our graduate scheme. Once you've completed the scheme and have taken up a permanent position, we'll help you to continue to expand your knowledge.

Case Study
Name: Senyo Adzaku
Joined: 2003
Role: Operations engineer at Hartlepool power station

I joined British Energy in 2003 after graduating with a Master's degree in chemical engineering from University College London.

My involvement with the company actually started in 1998 during a year out after my A-levels. I joined the 'Year in Industry' scheme and was offered a placement with British Energy. It was a real eye opener for me as I learnt much about nuclear power, the stations and the different aspects of power generation. As a result of the work carried out that year, I won the EEF (Engineering Employer's Federation) prize for the West of England region. At the end of my placement, British Energy offered to sponsor me through university.

During my two years on the graduate training scheme I had attachments on different sites and departments, which improved my all-round understanding of the company whilst allowing me to get a feel for which part I might want to work in eventually.

My diverse work experiences include the quality management group, safety case development branch, shift operations, station chemistry, health physics and nuclear safety group. The training program is also structured to help meet the requirements demanded by most professional institutions in the quest to become chartered.

Each of the attachments has provided me with a wide range of learning experiences, as well as interesting and challenging work, which has stood me in good stead. I strongly recommend British Energy to other graduates.
